Title: Organizational Meeting/A Survey of Some Theories of Learning: a Mathematician's View
Speaker: Catherine Bénéteau
Time: 10:45am‐11:35am
Place: CIS 1027

Abstract

In this talk, I will survey some of the theories of learning in mathematics education, as I understand them. What is the difference, for example, between a behaviorist and a cognitivist? What did Piaget, Vygotsky, and Dienes have to say about student learning? What has a modern approach to cognitive science contributed to our understanding of how students interact with and learn mathematics? Should I and do I care about any of this? What does it have to do, if anything, with my own classroom?
